Aerobic Bins facilitate alignment of Stakeholder Interests

• Removes the problems of bin washing and related problems of odour, flies and maggots for the householder. With the use of paper sacks and bags and a very distinctive bin, there is no customer confusion.

• With weight reduction and faster emptying cycle times, collection vehicles can cover significantly more ground in a day, resulting in a need for fewer vehicles. • No need to increase frequency of collection to take account of hot summers.

• No need to worry about foul-smelling liquids dripping onto crews when bins are inverted for emptying or onto the road when using compactor collection vehicles.

• The reduction of contamination means the quality of the feedstock meets the requirements of composting and anaerobic digestion facilities for producing the highest value soil treatment product – increasingly important as recovered soil improvers compete for market share. For materials destined for energy from waste facilities, the drying of organics contributes to increasing feedstock calorific value.

• Low levels of contamination plus weight reduction effect leads to dramatically lower requirements for plant capacities and processing equipment with a corresponding reduction in capital and operating costs.

• Stripping out significantly higher levels of organics from the residual stream paves the way for more efficient ways of processing dry recyclables.

• Collection and processing cost savings more than cover the provision of sacks enabling them to be provided at zero direct cost to the consumer. With the changed relationship between costs of recycling and disposal, the use of the Aerobic Bin is now viewed as a cheaper option than using ordinary bins.

• Addressing customer perception and the need to meet targets, aerobic bins lead to higher participation in both organic and dry recyclable collections with roughly one tenth of the level of contaminating materials in the organic fraction. • Customer complaints are removed as a problem associated with 2-weekly collections.

• Adoption of the Aerobic Bin contributes to reduced financial, operational and consumer relationship risks
